Material research

Reeds, rice, pinewood, silk, cotton and wool

Reed is a natural waste from the Netherlands. Mainly used for thatched roofs, we wanted to fit the material into the living space.

After a long research around the fiber of the reed and the ideal natural binder: the rice, I invited Éléna Hervé to think with me about the potential applications of this material. We realized that the material was malleable like earth and self-hardening. We partially covered a pinewood structure to strengthen the connections, then, taking advantage of the process steps, we used the water colored by the reed to dye fabric (wool, cotton and silk).
